This program prepares students to sit for a national certification examination to become professionally certified as a Medical Assistant. The program prepares students for careers in a variety of positions in today's medical facilities. The sequence of courses emphasizes a combination of medical theory and practical application necessary for successful employment. The grading system for Medical Assisting requires a minimum course grade of "C" for progress from specified courses to more advanced courses.

Classroom instruction and practical experience are divided between administrative skills and clinical skills in areas ranging from typing, scheduling appointments, banking and bookkeeping procedures, medical transcription, maintaining patient files, examination room techniques, assisting with minor surgery, administering medications, and performing diagnostic procedures including lab work and electrocardiography. During the program the student gains experience in a physician's office or appropriate facility by participating in an externship. Clinical courses may be scheduled in the day, evening, and on weekends.

Program graduates receive a diploma.

Diploma Admission Requirements:

Applicants must meet general admissions requirements, and must also:

  1. Be at least 17 years of age.

  2. Submit an application along with a non-refundable application fee.

  3. Present acceptable ASSET, COMPASS, SAT, ACT or CPE scores taken within the last five years or transfer of program level English and math from a regionally accredited college or university with a grade of C or better.

  4. Submit official documentation of an earned high school diploma, GED, or college degree.

  5. Applicants who do not meet the criteria will be classified as either developmental or provisional status and must take the prescribed developmental courses to prepare for the core curriculum.

  6. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the Medical Assisting advisor and Admissions when all developmental courses are completed and notify Medical Assisting advisor the quarter when the 8 pre-requisite classes are completed.

  7. Upon successful completion (or transfer in) of ENG 101, PSY 101, BUS 101, SCT 100, AHS 104, AHS 109, MAT 101-Meds, and AHS 101 with a “C” or better and a grade point average of 2.5 or higher, the student will be “program ready” and eligible for admission into the Medical Assisting program based on program ready date, available classroom space, and available clinical sites. In the event that two or more applicants complete requirements simultaneously, the application date will determine placement on the list. If the student changes the declared major to a different program and then changes back to Medical Assisting, the latest program application date will be used to determine placement. Math courses are not transferable into the Medical Assisting program. Program ready applicants are accepted Spring and Fall quarters into the day program and may begin taking courses with MAS designations. Students who are unsuccessful after a second attempt at course within the Medical Assisting curriculum will be advised to choose another program of study.

  8. Transferring Medical Assisting students from other technical colleges must make application and submit official transcripts. Each Medical Assisting course listed in the transferring student’s official transcript will be considered for transfer CREDIT after transferring student has demonstrated proficiency by examination. A score of 70 percent must be attained to demonstrate proficiency in all transferred Medical Assisting courses.

  9. Medical course and some others have a transfer/re-admittance life of five years. Withdrawn students or transfer-in students who desire admittance within five years must meet current admissions and curriculum requirements and will be admitted following the demonstration of competencies (70 percent or greater) in all previously completed Medical Assisting course work via written comprehensive exams and lab skill check offs. Deficiencies will result in the student repeating appropriate courses/courses. Readmission will be based on available space within the classroom and clinical sites.
