The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, is a federal law.  The purpose of this law is to afford students certain rights pertaining to their educational records.

 

•FERPA gives students the right to inspect and review their own records
•Students have the right to request amendments to their educational records
•Students have some control over the release of personally identifiable information from their records
•Directory information can be released without the consent of the student:
–Name
–Program of study
–Full/part time status
–Dates of attendance
–Degrees, diplomas, certificates awarded
–Awards received

  Any student who objects to the release of information may submit a written request to the Registrar clearly itemizing all information that should not be released.  See GTC catalog or website for further information on FERPA

•Title IX of the Americans with Disabilities ACT provides comprehensive civil rights protection for “qualified individuals with disabilities”

  Any individual who believes that he or she is a victim of ADA discrimination may file a complaint outlined in the grievance section of the Student Handbook addressed to:
